The M8 is Scotland's principal motorway, with thousands of commuters using it between Glasgow and Edinburgh. In the last few years I have driven between the two cities regularly. Along what was a tedious journey at the time, I used to stare out at the indistinct shapes on the horizon that were houses and towns; gradually I began to get curious about the places in between. On one of these journeys I spotted a sign that read "The Heart of Scotland" and I knew that I wanted to visit this place. I wanted to journey through all of the places that for many years had just been an indistinct blur at the corner of my eye. These are some of the places I visited and the people I met along the way.
